Clyde
Burnette began winning prizes for his oils at state fairs while he
was barely a teenager. Working as a commercial artist and serigraphis
for forty years, Clyde leans on this experience to achieve a remarkable
likeness in his preliminary compositional drawings. For the last 35
years, he has painted oil portraits with the same enthusiasm and inspiration
that he gave the advertising field. His dexterity with the oil medium
is apparent in the way he handles clothing, highlights on the hair,
soft and natural skin tones, making the portrait full of life yet
serenely simple and pleasing to the eye.
Burnette received a Fine Arts degree from William and Mary College
and is a graduate of Pratt Institute. He became the first President
of Atlanta's Professional Artist Association, and served 3 years on
the Board of Directors at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Although busy
with committees and associations, Burnette spends a great deal of
time getting to know each subject he paints, in order to capture the
real feelings and emotions of the individual.
A versatile painter with incredible control, Burnette's portraits
represent his subject' character from the strong and penetrating to
the soft and understated. His clientele include portrait commissions
for families, corporations, law firms, religious and educational organizations
and the medical profession. He was asked to paint Arch Bishop Eugene
Mariono's portrait for the Christ the King Cathedral, as well as James
Wilson, Jr.'s portrait for the Alabama Faces of Destiny traveling
exhibit. His painting of Martin Luther King, Jr. stands on display
at the National Historical Site in Atlanta.
