Although
Steve Childs was born in Atlanta, he has lived and worked in virtually
every part of the nation. He began formal art studies at the California
College of Arts and Crafts, a bachelor's from Georgia State University,
and a Master's in Fine Arts from Utah State University. Now living
in Kansas, Childs keeps busy with his art, but stresses that he 'thoroughly
enjoys what he does
to touch so many lives by sharing paintings
with others and making new friends through his work'.
His work has won him numerous awards in National Portrait Competitions
by American Artist and The Portrait Institute, along with his work
being shown in exhibitions since 1982, including the Alabama Faces
of Destiny Exhibition. Articles featuring his work and opinion appear
in magazines, and now serves as juror for portrait competitions. He
is a member of the Advisory Board of the American Society of Portrait
Artists, and also heads the Selection Committee.
Childs hails many prominent subjects including Garrison Keillor of
National Public Radio, Senior U.S. District Judge Richard C. Erwin,
U.S. Congressman Rob Portman, and hundreds of portraits of governmental,
cultural, and corporate figures. Childs is continuously sought after
for his portraits and keeps an impressive waiting list. His interest
in the human form and figure has kept him painting and drawing for
almost 30 years. It is both Childs' wonderful attitude and amazing
technique that keeps clients coming to him with confidence that the
result of the portrait will be magnificent.
