Although
a successful illustrator for many years, Michael Del Priore elected
to undertake years of intensive studies at the National Academy with
Everett Raymond Kinstler, the New York Academy with Nelson Shanks,
and with Daniel Greene at his North Salem Studio. Del Priore wanted
to express himself in a more 'personal' way, thus making the transition
into portraiture.
Now, when he's not working on portrait commissions for prominent South
Carolinians, Del Priore can be found teaching short courses at the
University of South Carolina or the Columbia Museum of Art. Many artists
attend his seminars and workshops throughout the state or enroll in
his oil and pastel courses, learning about basic drawing, perspective,
composition, value, technique, and approach. In addition to these,
Del Priore regularly lectures and demonstrates for civic groups, guilds
and institutes, and is a member of the Artists Fellowship Society
of New York. From 1997-2000, he served on the Board of Directors and
is now Board Emeritus of the American Society of Portrait Artists.
Del Priore's portrait commissions include recent governors of South
Carolina, U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, President Ronald Reagan, Bill
Gates, educational and corporate executives, and private individuals.
During his 25-year career, he has painted more than 700 portraits
that grace the walls of fine institutions and homes across the nation.
Perhaps key to his success is his love for portraiture itself, calling
it 'the most noble of art because it comes into intimate contact with
human nature, which is the highest form of life'.
