Richard
Whitney is noted for his portraits and landscapes painted in a traditional
manner. Whitney graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of New
Hampshire in 1968. He studied with Sidney F. Willis and with the noted
Boston painter, R.H. Ives Gammell, for 5 years. He is on the Board
of Advisors for the American Society of Portrait Artists. Whitney's
memberships have included Society of Illustrators, National Arts Club,
Allied Artists of America, the American Artists Professional League,
the Guild of Boston Artists and the Copley Society.
Whitney has won more than 30 regional and national awards, and his
paintings hang in over 400 public and private collections throughout
the United States and abroad, including Harvard University, the University
of Chicago. He is the youngest artist in history to have a painting
in the permanent collection of the State Capitol of Massachusetts,
and is one of a handful of artists to receive three grants from the
Greenshields Foundation of Montreal.
Traditional realism depicts the style of Whitney. Full of sensitivity
and emotion, Whitney's portraits can be felt and touched with the
eye. One can actually feel the softness of a sweater or the moisture
of the skin through sight instead of touch. Whitney's attention to
detail is consistently apparent in its highest form. Whitney expresses
that his constant goal is 'to capture what is beautiful in each person
and make it come alive.'
